Lt. Col. Alan W. “Wes” Spang, US Army Retired

Alan served in the US Army as an Officer of Artillery and later a Finance Officer during the period of June 1954 – April 1975 at overseas assignments in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam.  Stateside assignments included Ft. Tilden NY, Ft. Sill OK, Ft. Bliss TX, US Army Natick Laboratories MA, and Ft. Harrison IN where he retired from active duty at the US Army Finance Center in 1975.  He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and graduated from the University of Delaware.  While on active duty he was a graduate of the Army’s Artillery Office Advanced Course, Finance Office Advanced Course; and the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.  His military decorations include the US Army’s Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal.  Foreign decorations include the Republic of Korea’s Order of Military Merit and the Republic of Vietnam’s Cross of Gallantry.

After his military service of 21 years, Alan worked for and retired from the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County Indianapolis, IN on March 31, 1995 as the Director of Corporate Information Systems.  During that time he installed the first personal computer in 1981 and guided the Corporation during the formative years of personal computing along with the development of Local and Wide Area Networks which connected many healthcare providers throughout Marion County, such as hospitals and clinics, to the Corporate “Mainframe” computer’s medical information databases.

Alan was a member of East 91st Street Christian Church and a past Service Officer for the American Legion Robert E. Kennington Post 34.  Also, he was the past American Legion National Representative to the Roudebush VA Medical Center – Indianapolis.

Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Janet in October 2013.  Survivors include sister Janet Spang Hess, daughter Linda Spang O’Toole, sons Alan Wesley Spang Jr., Mark, Karl, and Greg as well as grandchildren Sean, Alex, Danielle, and Lauren Spang.

Calling will be one hour before the Memorial Service which will be held at the East 91 St. Christian Church (6049 E 91st St, Indianapolis, IN 46250) on December 1st at 11:00 AM.  Burial with military honors will follow at 2:00 PM at the Marion National Cemetery in Marion, Indiana.
